Short Answer Type Questions
Question Nos. 1 to 10 are Short Answer Type. Answer any 5 questions. Each question carries 2 marks: 5×2-10
1. What was European Lock-up meant for ? How was it different from the other jail?
ANS-The European Lock-up was meant for European convicts. It was different from the jail because it had no enclosing wall. A person inside his cell could have a fine view of the mountain and life outside.
2. What made Nehru cooped up?
ANS- Dripping water from the ceiling or rushing in from th windows during monsoon made Nehru cooped up in a litt narrow place.
3. What made noise like an artillery bombardment?
ANS- THE NOISE LIKE AN ARTILLERY BOMBARDMENT WERE THE WEAPONS OF WORLD WAR .
4. What made Nehru vault clear out of the bed?
ANS- In Alipore jail in Calcutta one night Nehru felt something moving slowly over his feet. With the help of a torch he saw a centipede on his bed. He jumped out of his bed immediately with wonderful swiftness and almost touched the cell wall.
5. How was the little monkey rescued?
ANS- The parent of the little monkey saw from the top of the high wall that a bit of string was tied around his neck (the baby monkey). A huge monkey suddenly jumped down into the crowd which surrounded the baby monkey. The crowd fled terrified and thus the little monkey was rescued.

11. Critically analyse the poem Where the Mind is Without Fear’.
ANS- The central theme of Rabindranath Tagore’s poem “Where the Mind is Without Fear” revolves around the poet’s vision for an ideal society or nation. Tagore expresses his aspirations for a world where the mind is liberated from fear and constraints, allowing for intellectual and spiritual growth.
12.What is patriotism? Discuss “Where the Mind is Without Fear” as a patriotic poem.
ANS- Patriotism means love for the country. Rabindranath Tagore was a patriotic nationalist who was ready to sacrifice everything for the well being of his country. He has a special vision of independent India. He prayed that our country should awaken into a state of ideal freedom which he calls “The heaven of freedom”. A country full of knowledge, wisdom, unity, progress, devotion was the desire of the poet Rabindranath Tagore.
13. Write the brief summary of the prose ‘Animals in Prison’.
ANS-Pandit Jawaharlal basically puts light on animals being treated as mere non-living and not given a equal respect per the basis of Humans. Solicitous Concern for Animals with a equally equipped love when they are around Nehru, is everything about the essay of “Animals in Prison”.In this piece he describes a period of solitary confinement that he had to undergo at Dehra Dun jail. He gives a detailed account of the sights and sounds he observed from his cell. He particularly mentions his experiences with the different insects, birds, small animals, stray dogs and kittens and so on.
